Dependencies

Sometimes one task can't really start until another is finished. Sam can't write the UAT2 exit report until Book UAT2 kick-off with Lumen QA is done. A dependency records that, so the waiting task shows as blocked until the other one is finished.

Add a dependency

  1. Open the task that's waiting (ex: UAT2 exit report).
  2. Click Dependencies to open the section.
  3. Under Blocked by, tick the task or tasks it's waiting on.
  4. Save the task.

The list shows the other open tasks in the same project, with their status. If there's nothing to pick, you'll see No other tasks to link, which means there aren't any other unfinished tasks in that project.

What it does

While any of the tasks it's waiting on are still open:

  • The card shows Waiting on: and the name of the task it's waiting for.
  • The task counts as blocked, so Hide blocked on the Board hides it.

As soon as those tasks are marked done, the label goes away and the task is back to normal. You don't need to do anything.

A dependency is a reminder, not a lock. You can still start or finish the waiting task whenever you like.

Remove a dependency

Open the waiting task, open Dependencies, untick the task under Blocked by and save.

Dependency or Mark blocked?

  • Use a dependency when you're waiting on another task in Trackli. It clears itself when that task is done.
  • Use Mark blocked when you're waiting on a person or something outside Trackli (ex: Corvel legal). You choose when it comes back. See Blocked tasks and Move to tomorrow.

Tips

  • Dependencies only link tasks in the same project. Choose the project first, or the section shows Select a project first.
  • Done tasks don't show in the list, since there's nothing left to wait for.
