Subtasks
Some tasks are really a handful of smaller ones. Sam's Steering pack isn't one job, it's updating the RAID log, pulling the status slides together and sending it round. Subtasks let you list those steps inside the task and tick them off as you go.
Add subtasks
- Open the task and click Subtasks to open the section.
- Type a step in Add a subtask... and press Enter (or click Add).
- Keep going for each step.
- Save the task.
A new subtask starts with the same status as its task. The section shows how many are done (ex: 2 of 3 completed) with a progress bar.
Update a subtask
Each subtask has its own row with:
- Four status dots for Backlog, To Do, In Progress and Done. Click a dot to set the status.
- Start and Due dates, if the step has its own timing.
- × to remove it.
Remember to save the task afterwards.
When you mark a task done while some of its subtasks are still open, Trackli asks whether to finish those too. Choose Mark all done or Just this task.
Show subtasks as their own cards
By default, subtasks stay inside their task. If you'd rather see each step as a card next to your other tasks, turn on Show subtasks in the bar above the Board, or Show subtasks as cards in Settings, Preferences.
Once it's on, subtasks show up as cards on the Board, in My Day and in All Tasks. They show on the Calendar too, if they have a start or due date. Each card shows the task it belongs to, and it picks up that task's project, tags, priority and assignee, so filters and grouping still work.
You can treat a subtask card much like a task:
- Drag it to another column to change its status.
- Use Move to tomorrow on it.
- Click it to open the Subtask window, where you can change the title, status and dates, or tick Add to My Day.
Turn a subtask into a full task
If a step grows into a job of its own, open the subtask card and choose Promote to task. It moves into the same project as a task in its own right and comes out of the original task. If the original task should wait for it, add it as a dependency. See Dependencies.
Tips
- Subtasks can't be marked blocked themselves. Block the task they belong to instead.
- The parent's name at the top of the Subtask window opens the full task.
